Scenario Briefing: XVIII Army Corps' flank attack out of Slovakia in the first days of the campaign proved to be a brilliant success. Army Krakow had insufficient forces to adequately defend the Slovak border and its reserve, the 10th Motorized Cavalry Brigade, could only slow, not halt, the German advance. The Poles were forced to abandon Katowice on September 3rd and Krakow on September 5th-6th. After less than week of fighting, the Krakow and Carpathian armies were in full retreat and efforts to re-establish defensive lines on the Dunajec and San rivers came to naught. By September 10th, it was apparent that Lwow, one of Poland's largest cities, would soon be threatened.
That day, General Wladyslaw Langner took charge of the Polish forces around Lwow and appointed Franciszek Sikorski to command the city garrison with what meager forces were available: one ON battalion, two marching battalions, and some security and training units. The Poles worked tirelessly to improve their positions as civilian laborers assisted the soldiers in digging trenches and anti-tank ditches.
Meanwhile, the truck-borne advance guard of the German 1st Mountain Division sped toward Lwow via Grodek Jagiellonski. Brushing aside Polish roadblocks along the way, the advance guard reached the outskirts of Lwow around 14:00 on September 12th. Hoping to capture the city swiftly before the Poles could organize a defense, General Ludwig Kubler ordered the advance guard into action immediately. Though the western perimeter was only thinly held when the Germans arrived, reinforcements were on the way. Three battalions of artillery had already arrived that morning and infantry reinforcements dispatched from Grodno and Bialystock would more than double the size of the garrison. Lwow would not fall swiftly.
