Scenario Briefing: After breaking through the Polish defenses at Piotrkow Trybulanski, Erich Hoepner's XVI Motorized Army Corps advanced northeast toward Tomaszow Mazowiecki on September 6th. Here, the Polish 13th Infantry Division, the last uncommitted division of Army Prusy, put up a stiff resistance but was obliged to withdraw to avoid encirclement. Less then a week into the campaign, the German 10th Army had smashed through the Polish defenses and opened the road to Warsaw.
After seizing Tomaszow Mazowiecki, XVI Motorized Corps split up. 1st Panzer Division headed east while 4th Panzer, commanded by Johann Stever, continued northeast toward the Polish capital. Having learned that the Polish government had left after the fall of Piotrkow Trybulanski, Stever expected to find Warsaw abandoned and, on the evening of September 8th, ordered Panzer Regiment 35 to seize the city. Advancing without supporting infantry or artillery, the German Panzers encountered stiff Polish resistance in the Ochota district and were forced to withdraw.
Though the Polish government had abandoned Warsaw, the army had not. General Walerian Czuma, head of the Polish Border Guard, had taken charge of the garrison and had spent the previous days preparing the defense. Elements of the 5th Infantry Division reinforced the Warsaw garrison and additional troops were levied from the populace. Facing a substantive defense, Stever decided to postpone the attack until his infantry and artillery could be brought forward. 4th Panzer Division renewed its assault the next morning, this time with three tank battalions, the rifle regiment, and divisional and corps artillery assets. Though the Poles had limited anti-tank assets, they were dug in and unwilling to yield the capital city to the invaders. Even with superior firepower, the Germans were in for a difficult fight.
