Scenario Briefing: The German breakthrough at the junction of the Lodz and Krakow armies forced the Polish command to employ its strategic reserve, Army Prusy, earlier than planned. Still mobilizing on September 1st, elements of Army Prusy were transported westward by train, piece by piece. Three of its divisions, the 3rd, 12th, and 36th, were subordinated to General Stanislaw Skwarczynski and tasked with establishing a defense on the Pillica river and protecting Radom. Events soon overtook Skwarcynski's operational group.
On September 5th, 2nd Light Division occupied Kielce and the next day overran elements of two reserve regiments that had been mobilized there just days before. Skwarczynski's divisions were now threatened with encirclement. Despite having repelled repeated enemy attacks at Przedborz, 36th Infantry Division was forced to abandon its positions on the Pilica as the group retreated toward the Vistula. Elements of the 3rd and 12th divisions, together with remnants of Group Kielce, concentrated in the woods south of Ilza on September 7th while the badly strung out 36th Infantry Division lagged behind. By September 8th, Operational Group Skwarcynski's last avenue of escape was cut when when a Kampfgruppe from 2nd Light Division took up positions blocking the Ilza-Lipsko road. The Poles had no choice but to fight their way back to the Vistula in a chaotic and confused battle.
