Scenario Briefing: 1st Panzer Division overwhelmed the Rozprza defenses on September 4th and, after a day-long battle, captured Piotrkow Trybulanski on the 5th. Outflanked by the onslaught, Operational Group Piotrkow retreated to the north while the badly mauled 19th Infantry Division withdrew to the east. Dab-Biernacki’s counterattack had been foiled before it could get underway. General Wladyslaw Kalinski’s 13th Infantry Division, held in reserve around Tomaszow Mazowiecki, was now the only Polish division left to block the advance of the XVI Motorized Corps’ two Panzer divisions. Kalinski deployed his 43rd Infantry Regiment north of Tomaszow around Ujazd and the forests to the west. The 45th Infantry Regiment defended the southwestern approaches to the town and the 44th was held in reserve.

After fighting with advance elements of 13th Infantry Division at Wolborz and Bedkow, 1st and 4th Panzer divisions advanced towards Tomaszow early on September 6th. 1st Panzer would attack the city from the southwest while 4th Panzer skirted around the Polish defenses to the north. Though the Poles had blocked the main roads into town, there was a several kilometer gap between the 43rd and 45th regiments that tracked vehicles could exploit. More significantly, 13th Infantry Division’s position was unconnected to any other organized formation of the Polish Army and its northern positions were anchored to any physical obstacle. The defense of Tomaszow was a roadblock, one which was vulnerable to encirclement and annihilation.
