Scenario Briefing: After the Poles were compelled to abandon the Mlawa fortifications, the German 3rd Army swung to the east towards the Narew River. General Walter Petzel's I Corps was tasked with the reduction of the Pultusk Bridgehead.

The Pultusk Bridgehead had been fortified before the war and was intended to be a jumping off point for a later counteroffensive. The garrison, consisting of three battalions of reservists and ON troops, was prepared to offer stiff resistance but lacked the reserves and artillery assets needed to repel a determined attack. After the defeat of the Modlin Army, the Polish command rushed reinforcements to hold the Narew River and the 1st Legions Infantry Division arrived on the morning of September 6th after a grueling march. Meanwhile, the German I Corps advanced southeast from Mlawa and, by midday on the 6th, the 61st Infantry Division was ready to attack.
