Scenario Briefing: General Antoni Szylling, commander of Army Krakow, deployed the bulk of his army opposite the German border, occupying fortifications designed to protect Katowice and its all-important coal mines and steel mills. Just one brigade was left to defend the approaches through the Carpathians south of Krakow.

With just seven battalions, Colonel Janusz Galadyk's 1st Mountain Brigade lacked the resources needed to defend the more than 100-kilometer front it had been charged with. Though this rugged, mountainous terrain was naturally defensible, Galadyk's thinly spread brigade could not hope to stop the four German divisions advancing against it out of Slovakia. Its far-flung battalions were forced to retreat under pressure on September 1st, ceding the towns of Zakopane, Czarny Dunajec, and Nowy Targ.

Hours into the campaign, it was evident that the situation south of Krakow was very dangerous. Little stood in the way of the 2nd Panzer and 4th Light divisions as they approached the crossroad towns of Jordanow and Rabka. If these two mobile German divisions were able to clear the Carpathians, Army Krakow would be threatened with encirclement and speedy annihilation. To counter the threat, Szylling sent the elite 10th Motorized Cavalry Brigade to fight a delaying action in the Beskid Foothills. The 24th Uhlans arrived just in time to block the advance guard of 2nd Panzer Division at Wysoka, a few kilometers south of Jordanow, as night fell on September 1st. Though its initial advance on Jordanow had been blocked, 2nd Panzer wasn't finished. Artillery was brought up in the evening, elements of 3rd Rifle Regiment and 3rd Panzer Regiment prepared to renew the assault in the morning.
