Scenario Briefing: Advancing out of East Prussia, Nikolaus von Falkenhorst's XXI Corps was tasked with seizing the Vistula Bridges at Grudziadz. Falkenhorst's troops encountered minimal resistance at the border and by midday the Germans had reached the Osa River. This sleepy stream would have presented little obstacle had it not been for Polish efforts to fortify its southern banks. In the run up leading up to the invasion, General Stanislaw Switalski's 16th Infantry Division, part of Army Pomorze's Operational Group East, had been put to work preparing fieldworks and obstacles. The most direct approaches to Grudziadz were protected by a network of concrete pillboxes. Rather than attack the heaviest fortifications directly north of the city, Von Falkenhorst decided to make the main effort further to the east. Supported by a Panzer battalion, two of 21st Infantry Division's regiments were concentrated against a salient in the Polish line near Nowo Gora and Rogozno-Zamek. After punching through the Polish defense, 21st Infantry Division would advance south and west toward Grudziadz and its bridges. 228th Infantry Division, a Landwehr formation, would make supporting attacks further toward the east. Expecting an easy victory, the Germans would encounter determined resistance on the Osa and a series of vicious counterattacks by Operational Group East's reserves.
