Scenario Briefing: At 04:34 on September 1st, eleven minutes before the shelling of Westerplatte, German bombers struck Polish positions at Tczew. The aerial bombardment was accompanied by an overland attack from the east. Led by an armored train and a battalion of entrained infantry, Group Medem left Marienburg before dawn, murdering curious civilian customs officials and railroad workers to maintain secrecy as it advanced across Danzig territory toward its objective. The German battlegroup's mission was to surprise the Polish garrison at Tczew and capture the Vistula bridges before they could be destroyed. Shortly after Group Medem's departure, SS-Heimwehr Danzig entered Poland and fell on Tczew from the north. The actions against Tczew marked the first combat operations of the Second World War and foreshadowed the brutality of what would become the largest, most destructive, and deadliest conflict in human history.
