Designer Notes: This scenario describes the second attempt by the 39th Army to capture the town of Dukhovshchina.
Scenario Briefing: When the troops of the Western Front were preparing for the offensive operation against Yelnya-Dorogobuzh, the troops of the left wing of the Kalinin Front of General Yeremenko, after a five-day pause, resumed the offensive in the direction of Dukhovshchina. The 39th Army, reinforced by the 5th Guards Rifle Corps, launched an offensive in the same direction as the previous attack in mid-August. The Germans, having gathered reserves in this sector of the front, put up fierce resistance. The inclusion of the 5th Guards Rifle Corps between the 2nd Guards Corps and the 83rd Rifle Corps did not lead to the success of the operation. The XXVII.AK continuously counterattacked the formations and units of the Kalinin Front. In addition, it improved its defensive positions. As a result of intense fighting, the German defensive resistance inflicted serious losses on the 39th Army, which after several days of offensive, was forced to stop the attacks to rest its worn units.
