Scenario Briefing: Operation Spring Awakening (Frühlingserwachen) was the last major German offensive of World War II. Also known as the Plattensee offensive by German sources and as the Lake Balaton defensive operation by Soviet Union sources. It took place in Western Hungary, 50 km southwest of Budapest. It lasted from March 6 to March 15, 1945. The main objective was the encirclement and destruction of the 3rd Ukrainian Front from Lake Valence to the Drava River in the Balkans, in a situation similar to Kursk. The German units involved from Army Group South included the 2nd Panzer Army (reinforced with a Corps from Army Group F), the 6th Panzer Army (with two SS-Panzer Corps ) and the III Panzer Corps from Army Group Balck.
Eight Panzer Divisions and numerous armored battalions were assembled. In front of them was the 3rd Ukrainian Front (with its new and powerful anti-tank brigades based on the deadly SU-100 Self-Propelled Artillery vehicle) and its allies: 1st Bulgarian Army (with two Corps) and Tito's Yugoslav 12th Corps of the 3rd Yugoslav Army and the most powerful ally of all: the endless rivers of mud.
The Germans attacked on three axes: Operation Spring Awakening in the Balaton-Lake Velence area, Operation Icebreaker (Eisbrecher) south of Lake Balaton and Operation Forest Devil (Waldteufel) south of the Drava-Danube triangle towards the Balkans.
The German advance was halted on March 15, and on March 16 the Red Army and Allied units began their devastating Vienna offensive.
