Designer Notes: This scenario describes the first Soviet attempt to take Akhtyrka by a frontal attack.

Scenario Briefing: After the breakthrough of German lines during the early phases of Operation Rumyantsev, a huge hole opened between PzAOK.4 and Armee-Abteilung Kempf. The Soviets needed their infantry units to clear out remaining forces in the area of Tomarovka-Borisovka, so these units took longer to continue their advance south. Trofimenko’s 27th Army was tasked with protecting the right flank of the 6th Guards Army and 5th Guards Tank Army that were exploiting the broken front and advancing towards Bogodukhov. The commander of the Voronezh Front, General Vatutin, ordered the 27th Army’s mobile force, the 4th Guards Tank Corps, to capture the city of Akhtyrka. By forcing the Vorskla River, they would divide PzAOK.4 and Armee-Abteilung Kempf. The Germans, realizing the importance of the Soviet attack, began to send reinforcements to the Kharkov area, one of these being Panzergrenadier Division Grossdeutschland. It had only just returned from the Orel Salient to its former theater of operations and was immediately sent to Akhtyrka to slow down the Soviet advance and close the gap.

Again, the Russian player is dominated
by the number of turns. This scenario
should be for a longer time period. The Russian player is not able to bring his
his numbers to create a favorable result.
