Operation Vitality I, 24 October 1944: Brigadier Keefler, acting commander of the 2nd Canadian
Infantry, drew up a bold plan. Supported by strong artillery support, the Royal Regiment of Canada
would punch a hole through the outer German defenses in a pre-dawn attack. At sunrise, the Essex
Scottish Regiment, carried in trucks, together with Shermans of the Fort Garry Horse and the
armored cars of the 14th Royal Canadian Hussars, would pass through the hole in the German lines
and speed west across the highway to the Zuid-Beveland Canal on the first day. Keefler's hope for a
lighting advance across the isthmus proved to be overly optimistic. Rain, mud, flooding, landmines,
well-placed anti-tank guns, and persistent German resistance were to turn Operation Vitality I into a
hellish slog...
[Size:Small]
Design Note: The victory conditions in this scenario are based on the Canadian intent to cross the
Zuid-Beveland Canal at the end of the first day. The placement of objective hexes strongly favors
the Germans. The objective hexes at Rilland and Krabbendijke are terminating objects which will
expire after a set amount of time - the German player need not attempt to defend these indefinitely.
Though the German player cannot hope to stop the Canadian advance, he can win be delaying and
harassing the Allied player in a controlled retreat.
