Mogilev, June 23rd 1944: As dawn broke, the sound of heavy artillery from the north could be heard. But, east of Mogilev, a thick fog blanketed the Pronya River valley, causing a two hour delay in the opening artillery barrage. Nevertheless, when visibility improved enough for fire direction, a powerful barrage let loose from the guns of the 2nd Byelorussian Front artillery. Under the cover of this fire, many specially trained assault engineers and sapper battalions, accompanying four rifle divisions, moved forward to swim, ford, ferry or float over the river to form a bridgehead, to enable the follow-up pontoon engineers to begin the task of bridging the river. Additional divisions were fed into the advance in the late afternoon to exploit the successful bridge operation. As the line began to give, the Germans moved fresh forces into the rear areas. But it was too little too late, the Russians were "over the Pronya" and there was no stopping them now. [Size, medium] Designer Note: Players are advised to review the rule for "River and Canal Ferrying" under Help | User => The Basics => Engineers, before proceeding. This scenario has been optimized for HTH play.

The best approach is not as obvious as it seems.
Fast is fine, but accuracy is everything.

There is a delicate game balance provided the German player retreats skillfully and launches localized counterattacks cautiously against the overwhelming Russian forces. Between equal skilled players, the scenario is balanced. A recommended Minsk '44 scenario!

I played this scenario twice; once as the German commander and once commanding the Russians. The key to a Russian victory is the successful preservation and rapid deployment of the three Russian platoon bridges "over the Pronya." The Russian player must deploy at least one bridge unit to keep his infantry units, who have been ferried over the river in earlier turns, to avoid becoming isolated from supply. Also, the Russian armor must use the platoon bridges to cross the Pronya River. As I wrote in an earlier review, there is a delicate play balance provided the German retreats wisely from the overwhelming Russian artillery, armor and infantry and makes limited, but judicious counterattacks. In both my games, a winner was decided only in the last few turns. This scenario has good replay value and there is more to it then at first glance. As an aside, I believe a female Russian soldier is depicted on the platoon bridge unit in the PzC Gold Version! Pretty cool!

As others have said, the key to this scenario is getting at least one bridge built quickly. In our game, simple bad luck prevented the Russians from completing the first bridge until turn 11! By that time it was too late to achieve a breakthrough before the end of the scenario. Still, a good game overall.
