Zety, 35 km SW of Stalingrad, Nov 20th 1942: On the second day of the Soviet Uranus Offensive, a badly supplied 51st and 57th Army joined in the attack. It was once again focused on shattering the weaker Rumanian infantry formations holding the flanks of the 6th Army in Stalingrad. In this southernmost section of the south flank battle, the task of 51st Army was to breach the line in the sector held by the Rumanian 1st Infantry Division, between Lake Tsatsa and the larger Lake Barmantsak. No sooner had the crisis in the Krasnoarmeysk sector 25km north been averted by the swift action of the 29th Motorized Division, than a breakthrough came in this sector. However, elements of 29th Mot Divisions were in full swing and well positioned to avert this second disaster by driving south into the flank of the 4th Mech Corps. Then orders came down to break off the attack and adopt a defensive screen. This action allowed 'the Long Left Hook" of the Soviet breakthrough to race unchecked deep into the German rear, encircling von Paulus' Sixth Army in Stalingrad [Size, medium] Designer's Note: This scenario has been optimized for HTH play.

Lots of Romanians are going to die, and you feel as the Germans this is impossible, but it is.
If you're the Rumanian, keep the Russians in front of you. If you're the Russian, you've got to get behind the Rumanians.
I was able to keep the majority of the Romanian 1st Infantry Division defending units intact by systematically withdrawing and creating defense in depth to slow and prevent any breakout of the Russian 51st Army armor. Snow conditions also slowed down the Russian offensive. Romanian artillery and Luftwaffe air support helped break up some of the Russian attacks. We also played with the Delayed Disruption Optional Rule that favors the defender. In the end, the elements of the German 29th Motorized Division were not needed to shore up the Romanian defense since by the time these units arrived at the front lines, my Russian opponent had conceded the game. Several victory hexes - especially the 500 VP hexes in the North are out of reach to the Russian player. Between equal skilled players, this scenario moderately favors the Axis. Scenario needs to be adjusted with more victory hexes positioned in the East to give the Russians a better chance of a Minor Victory and force the Axis player to defend more forward. Not a recommended Stalingrad 42 scenario.
