Abganerovo area, 65kms S of Stalingrad, Aug 29th 1942: This is a "What If" scenario. Gen Hoth had decided that his men would no longer fight over the heavily fortified hills south of Krasnoarmeisk. In a bold plan he pulled out his Panzer and Motorized formations and moved them 30 miles away to attack northwards to outflank the left wing of the 64th Army. The plan worked so well, the Germans saw an opportunity to now pocket the 62nd and 64th Armies. The problem was that Gen Paulus was unable to spring a couple of divisions to free his mobile formations to meet Hoth's armor coming from the south. "What If" Paulus had been able to become the northern half of the pincers? [Size, large] Designer's Note: This scenario has been optimized for HTH play. The trench lines, marked with impassable hexes, along the northern and south eastern map edges are to indicate where the forward positions were at this date. They have no bearing on the battle.

Strong Russian fortifications, soft ground conditions and with many of the German forces fixed well into the game gave the Russians a big advantage. Also the game length was a bit short for what the Germans were expected to accomplish.

We had to surrender... but it seems to be a very interesting scenario.

Awfully tough for the Germans if they can't create major breakthroughs/encirclements. The Russians have enough formations to dig several lines of defense and wear the Axis out with a defense-in-depth.

A lot of different ways to approach this scenario for both sides.

weather is terrible for attacker

Despite the lopsided score, I feel that the game was won due to a PERFECT STORM of events. A russian counterattack to the north when the Germans pulled a division off the line allowed an army of Ruskies to roll the Germans up, while the south took a beating from Hoth.

The Axis forces in the north are mostly fixed, and weaker then the Russians. After transferring all the mobile russians from the south, great gains were made, resulting in a Russian Victory in the north. The south was probably around a Draw or Axis minor victory.

The Axis in the north are mostly fixed, and the Russians outnumbered them (especially after transferring all the mobile forces from the south). Resulted in the Germans being isolated and rolled up.

Quite a bit in favor of the German forces.

Balanced scenario with many different operational choices to make for both sides.

A dandy scenario. Classic quantity vs. quality. Germans wear down if they can't breakthrough and get mobile. Lots of Russians to defend in depth.

Difficult scenario for the Russians. They need to retreat early and often while trying to prevent the Germans from making a significant breakthrough.
