The Battle of the Ypre-Comines Canal, 27 May 1940: As the Belgian Army crumbled under the weight of Heeresgruppe A's Lys River offensive, three German infantry divisions swung to the left towards the Ypres-Comines Canal, held by the British 5th Infantry Division. With the rest of the BEF and the French 1re armée dangling precariously to the south, a German breakthrough in this sector would dash any hope of evacuation. After limited actions on the afternoon of May 26th, the Germans mounted a determine effort on the 27th.
