The Battle of Arras, 21 May 1940: After probing the Arras defenses on May 20th, Rommel's
Panzers swung to the northwest to outflank the town. In the afternoon of the 21st, Panzer-Regiment
25 headed towards Acq, passing Haut-Avesnes a little after 14:00. The infantry trailed behind at a
considerable distance. Overconfident from days of continuous success, Rommel made no effort to
secure his right flank - his division advanced in column just a few kilometers away from the Allied
lines. Meanwhile, General Harold Franklyn, commander of the British 5th Infantry Division and the
newly constituted 'Frankforce," planned a counterattack. The 6th and 8th battalions of the Durham
Light Infantry and the 1st Army Tank Brigade, starting from the Scarpe northwest of Arras, would
attack southeast through Dainville and Duisans with the mission of clearing the area southwest of
Arras and lifting German pressure on the garrison. This force was to be supported on its right by
elements of René Prioux's corps de cavalerie. The Allies crossed the Scarpe around 14:00, putting
several German motorized columns to flight. By 16:00 the Allied force had occupied a line from
Agnez to Dainville and was ready to continue to push to the southeast in front of Arras. With
Panzer-Regiment 25 cut off from the rest of division and his riflemen strung out on the road south
and east of Arras, Rommel would have to improvise a defense...[Size: Small]
