On the 20th July, Stavka reinforced Timoshenko's Western Front with armies from the newly formed Front of Army Reserves. Timoshenko was ordered to use these four new Armies and orchestrate a major counteroffensive aimed at destroying the German forces at Smolensk and rescuing the Soviet forces trapped there. With three operational groups, plus a fourth already defending near Yartsevo, he was to launch simultaneous attacks toward Smolensk and Dukhovshchina. Although this scenario simulates a Soviet counterattack, the Germans are still the first player and must meet their operational goals of reducing the pocket and advancing on Roslavl'.
