The First Punic War - The Carthaginians for the first time have fielded an army under the Spartan mercenary general Xanthippus. The Romans had invaded Africa in 256 BC under the command of Marcus Atilius Regulus and it was Regulus who sought out the Carthaginians in the Bagradas Plains, little did he realise the army he was about to face. The Romans are advancing towards the top left of the map.
