Date: February 23, 1945, 0800 hours
Location: Manila - City Center
Historical Context:
The last major engagements in Manila centered around the Agriculture, Finance, and Legislative Buildings located in the city center. Reinforced concrcrete public structures, each a fortress in its own right, had their entrances barricaded with fighting positions installed inside and each utilized an elevated view of the wide and open fields of fire around them that allowed the Japanese to direct fire across the city. The Japanese chose to fight to the death. Unfortunately, civilians were sweep up in the fighting with many held hostage and others huddled down in what shelter they could find. The US 37th Infantry lead the final assault that began on February 23 with an artillery barrage, M-7 self-propelled howitzers firing directly with 76mm tank destroyers and 75mm Shermans providing support for the advancing infantry as they leapfrogged through the smoking rubble. Manila was "the city that died in battle." Special rule: Only civilian units may exit the 10VP hex located on the SE edge of the map. Recommended Optional Rules: Quality Loss Modifier, Vehicle Fire Over, Alternate Fire Density.
Historical Research:
Most of the Japanese positional defenses (pill boxes, trenches, breast works, AT gun placement, and many of the road obstacles) I discovered in a declassified WW2 Army doc in which intelligence officers sketched out the Manila City Center Japanese defenses from civilian eyewitness reports! It was truly a fantastic find and adds to the authenticity of the scenario! Also, the Japanese squad oob reflects captured US M-1 carbines as the Japanese discovered a cache of US weapons stored in a Manila warehouse.
What this means for game play.
Japanese defenders will be in fortified positions, pill boxes, trenches, IPs w/ AP and AT mines, obstacles, barricades, booby traps, and breast works. Also, suicide squads and snipers are in the Japanese oob. US forces are a reinforced infantry battalion w/ assault teams armed w/ flamethrowers, 105mm arty w/ Direct Fire (DF), M-7 Priests w/ DF, 76mm TDs, 75mm Shermans, and scout cars. US player must move cautiously forward utilizing smoke rounds and being mindful of LOS. Careless and hurried US advances will result in massive casualties!
