June 12, 1985: As the 3d Shock Army ground its way across the North German Plain, it had its sights set on the rich industrial heartland of the Ruhr. Increasingly, however, the numerous rivers and canals of this part of Germany promised delay and disruption. On the night of June 12, the 7th Guards Airborne Division landed between the Ruhr and the Lippe rivers, near the town of Werl and the city of Hamm. Their mission: seize the land bridge between the two rivers and pave the way for the 3rd Shock Army's vanguard to pass through to the Ruhr. With the 12th Guards Tank Division still hours away, the men of the 7th would have to fight fast and hard to avoid becoming a Hamm sandwich for the rapidly consolidating NATO forces advancing on the landing zones. Four decades after Market-Garden the limits of airborne operations were still being explored in Northwest Europe. [Size medium] Designer Note: Plays best as Human vs Human.

Over the last three years I have grown very fond of the title here as it has the best collection of the campaigns and scenarios available anywhere in the MC series including ME '67 with it's abundance of both historical and hypothetical clashes.Too bad it's the premature end of the Rhinegate operation.

I was able to keep my NATO opponent off balance by a 7th Guards Airborne Division drop near the city of Hamm to seize the bridges early in game. This attack allowed my WP ground forces to exploit across the Ruhr River and lay siege to the Hamm 1000 VP hex. A second diversionary air drop near the town of Werl kept much of the NATO relief force occupied and unable to reinforce the Hamm defenders. The last few turns saw the WP 3rd Shock Army vanguard and 7th Guards Airborne forces encircling and annihilating the NATO Hamm forces to carry the day for a WP Major Victory.
