Chonan region, 35 miles south of Seoul, July 22th 1985 [D+37]: The US 2nd ACR shadowed the
advance of the Chinese 39th Mechanized Army and successfully slowed their advance with hit and
run tactics. This bought time for the arrival of the US 1st Armored Division which quickly
conducted a passage of lines with the battered 2nd ACR and smashed into the unsuspecting enemy.
The elite 1-37 Armored Battalion again led the attack to relieve a besieged enemy as they had at
Bastogne in 1944. Many Chinese tankers saw their last battle on this day as "Old Ironsides"
demonstrated the triad of power from which they live by; Speed, Firepower and Shock Effect.
[Size: medium] Designer's notes: The Chinese Type 80 tank was released to the press in 1987. It is
widely speculated that this tank was in limited service prior to this so it has been included in small
numbers in the Chinese elite 1st Tank Division in the Beijing Assault Force. Because of the Type
80's infancy in this operation it is prone to maintenance failures.
