Zaragoza: The Second Assault - After the initial French assault had been repulsed, a small Spanish relief army was routed at Epila and French reinforcements arrived to strengthen the besieging force. General Verdier arrived on 26th June, replacing Lefebvre, and his first decision was to drive the Spanish from the Monte Torrero hill and establish siege guns on this key position. Other guns were deployed against the Aljafferia castle and the Portillo gate. After some days of battering in which substantial damage was done to the ancient walls, Verdier launched assaults on both the western and southern fronts of the city.
