Sorauren 28 July 1813 - Variant scenario using gun sections, 10 minute turns and an alternative pdt. The actions at Maya and Roncesvalles on 25 July had proved unsatisfactory for both Wellington and Soult, since the passes had been forced, yet the French had lost valuable time. Wellington now suspected that the enemy might make a violent demonstration against the forces blockading Pampeluna to disguise an attempt to relieve San Sebastian. Meanwhile, Soult's troops advancing towards Pampeluna were delayed by poor mountain tracks and unreliable guides, giving time for more Allied forces to concentrate and prepare for the French attack. Although Clausel had arrived at Zabaldica by 9am on 27 July, Soult refused to order an attack until Reille and D'Erlon had arrived. So the only action that day was an unsuccessful attempt to capture the "Spanish hill" overlooking Zabaldica. Soult wasted the following morning moving troops into position for the planned attack - movements clearly visible to Wellington, who was still awaiting his 6th Division which arrived around 10.30am. Soult had intended a 1pm general assault but Clausel, observing the approach of Pack's 6th Division, decided it was essential to attack early. NB: With 50m contour elevations, attacking uphill will be a difficult task in this scenario.
