San Sebastian: The Assault of 31 August 1813 - The Second siege of San Sebastian followed a similar course as the unsuccessful first siege, with an artillery barrage against the old seaward breaches. However, the number of siege guns had been increased and additional guns battered the curtain wall behind the hornwork. Meanwhile the city itself - despite the danger to the numerous non-combatant Spanish civilians - was targeted by howitzers and mortars. After five days of bombardment, the French garrison had suffered significant losses, including the destruction of most of their available artillery. The Allied assault would be launched at 11am - in broad daylight - to coincide with low tide at noon.
