San Sebastian: The First Siege Assault 25 July 1813 - After battering the weak sea wall until viable breaches had been created, the Allies launched a pre-dawn assault at low tide, despite the confusion caused by attacking in darkness. A successful mine was also detonated against the hornwork, but insufficient troops were assigned to attack this sector. The French were ready for the attack and put up fierce resistance and, by the time dawn broke, it was clear that the entire assault was a failure. Since the historical assault force is outnumbered by the French and will have difficulty winning, the rest of the Allied troops will release as the battle progresses to allow the possibility of committing additional troops.
