Lleida: The French assault 13 May 1810 - After routing O'Donnell's relief army on 23 April, Suchet proceeded with the siege of Lleida and by 7 May the French batteries began the bombardment of the north front of the town, securing two viable breaches by 13 May. In the meantime, the outlying forts on the other side of the town had been secured. Historically, the French assault carried the breaches but then encountered stiff resistance in fierce street fighting. To secure the prompt surrender of the castle, Suchet drove the non-combatants at gun-point towards the retreating Spanish troops and into the citadel. He then bombarded the crowded citadel under the Spanish commander surrendered.
