14 June 1800 - Historical - Intended to be played Head to Head - The Battle of Marengo was Bonaparte's greatest victory prior to Austerlitz. The timely arrival of Desaix late in the afternoon saved the French army from a crushing defeat. The setting: Melas had been outflanked by Bonaparte and had to defeat the French in battle and breakout to Tortona to regain his lines of communication. He devised a plan whereby the Austrian army would cross the Bormida River and attack the French forces near Marengo and then continue on to Tortona and beyond. The morning attacks began with O'Reilly crossing the river and advancing on the Pedrabona farm. The French skirmishers were quickly routed out of their positions and the brigade fell back on Marengo. The Austrians continued crossing the bridge and made three assaults on the town of Marengo. Finally they broke through and were able to press the French back to the east. The French were able to build a line near C.Grossa and finally Desaix arrived. Never losing hope, Bonaparte ordered Desaix and Kellerman to counterattack and the Austrians were forced back into Alessandria. Melas had lost his bid to breakthrough to the east and he sued for peace shortly thereafter. Napoleon had won one of his greatest victories.

The historical battle. The Austrians debouch from their fortress and attack the French. Outnumbered at first they gradually increase in strength.

The forces are pretty even. French start outnumbered, but will outnumber the Austrians at the end.

With the current scoring conditions, a draw is likely almost every time this is played.

The low value of objectives versus the points needed for even a minor victory does not encourage either side to take decisive action to try to win.

With some minor edits, this could be a real nail-biter that comes down to the last few turns.

Initially the French are widely Scattered when the Austrians decamp and attack them. The French need to hold on until help arrives.

The French need to pull back, keep their forces together and conduct a fighting withdrawal until their reinforcements arrive to take on the Austrians. Trying to hold Marengo or the surrounding area early will lead to piecemeal destruction by the Austrians.

Even with the thrashing I took as the French, I feel it is well balanced because French reinforcements do arrive and the French player needs to wait and consolidate their forces.

This is a great scenario - I really enjoyed this game. Is balanced, is very difficult and you realize as the french how hard it was to and lucky Napoleon got.
Do not hold Marengo, you need a tight centre and you absolutely must take out guns at all cost.

Dominated by vineyards making advances tricky.
Multiple potential avenues for the Austrians once Marengo itself is taken but easy to spread yourself too thinly.

Good challenge
