Talavera 27th July 1809 - French Night Attack. Having reconnoitered the enemy lines, Victor decided that if he could secure the Cerro de Medellin, a key defensive point on the British left flank, this would give a significant advantage in the forthcoming battle. Ruffin's division was to launch a three-pronged attack on the Cerro, but while the 9e Leger had some initial success against Low's unprepared KGL, the 96e got bogged down in a firefight and the 24e lost it's way in the darkness and never made contact with the enemy. However, the importance of this key position was such that the French were to make a further attempt to capture it the following dawn.
