During the second siege of Badajoz, Wellington left his second-in-command, Lt. General Sir Brent Spencer, watching the Portuguese frontier around Almeida. In the event that the French Armée de Portugal, now under Marshal Marmont, should move against him, Spencer's instructions were to abandon Almeida, which had not yet been rendered defensible, and fall back to the southwest. If Marmont followed, Spencer was to make a stand around Rendo and Sabugal. In reality, Marmont was unable to refit his new command in time to act, but in this scenario it is assumed that the French commissariat managed to get the troops back into the field in time to move against Spencer. Having dropped off a detachment to secure Almeida, Marmont now prepares to assault Spencer's outnumbered British in their defensive position on the heights northeast of Sabugal. This version of the scenario is set up for head-to-head play.
