Badajoz - The 2nd San Cristobal Assault 9 June 1811. After the battles of Fuentes de Onoro and Albuera, Wellington was able to send Beresford 10,000 reinforcements and the siege of Badajoz was resumed. However, while the 46 gun siege train was twice as large as in the previous siege, it was still largely composed of antiquated 17th century brass 24pdrs from the walls of Elvas, with irregular calibres and the tendency to droop at the muzzle after rapid firing, necessitating a 7 or 8 minutes wait between rounds to allow the metal to cool. Attempting to breach the castle walls proved unsuccessful, but eventually the walls of the San Cristobal fort were damaged sufficiently to risk an assault on 6th June, although when attempted it was found that the breach was impractical. A further three days of battering followed before a second assault was launched on 9th June.
