As part of Operation Union 3/5th Marines supported by 1/3rd Marines launched a major attack on VC units North of Que Song in an attempt to break the VC/NVA back and cut off their retreat. They were however surprised by overwhelming odds and had to call in 4 Phantom strikes and major artillery support to keep from becoming overrun. As part of those airstrikes A Co 3/5th was hit by friendly fire.
