The camp was attacked on August 18, 1968 by the 40th NVA Artillery Regiment and the 101D NVA Infantry Regiment. The camp was also attacked in April of 1970. One of the defenders, Gary Beikirch, was awarded the Medal Of Honor for his actions during that battle. The camp was highly vulnerable to attack because of the fact that it was located in a small valley completely surrounded by high hills from which enemy gunners could get clear shots at the camp.
