"Salamis, Cyprus 307 BC - Having landed on Cyprus with 15,000 foot and 400 cavalry, Antigonos' son Demetrios took Urania and Carpesia by storm and then advanced on Salamis, which was defended by Ptolemy's general Menelaos with 12,000 infantry and some 800 cavalry. Menelaos decided to fight a pitched battle, but his troops were quickly routed and driven back into the city with Demetrios' army in hot pursuit. A decisive naval battle would give control of the island to Antigonos' faction and, on hearing of his son's victory, he assumed the title of "Basileus" (king), permitting Demetrios the same honour. However, the defeated Ptolemy and the other diadochoi promptly declared themselves kings too."
