The war in Russia is three days on and the Russian front is collapsing under the German Blitzkrieg. But for the German infantry, whose job it was now is to follow up and "mop up", eliminate all Soviet resistance left behind the advancing armored forces. The blitzkrieg was not such a grand headline for the follow up German infantry. The ancient Russian frontier fortress of Brest-Litovsk with it's four island citadels of fortification within the complex would prove to be a true omen. The German 45.Infantry Division has the responsibility to clear the Central Island. Here the 3.Battalion, 135.Regiment had it's realization that the Russians are extremely tough defenders.
The battalion was mauled, ambushed and forced to withdraw yesterday. Seventy men survived and are cut off, isolated in the Old Church complex.
