The combined German and Italian air, land and sea campaign against Crete was on.
The axis air assault was centered around the German paratroopers and glider forces that, rather than concentrating their forces spread them across all key northern points.
The allies: Greeks, Cretans, British and New Zealanders were not surprised but simply overwhelmed by the audacity and air superiority of the Axis.
The shock of the first day assault and by German straffing forced the New Zealander Infantry, perched upon Hill 107 overlooking Maleme air field and dealing some serious losses upon the Germans, to inevitably withdraw south of Hill 107 and
Maleme air field.
