Dec 31, 1862 - Jan 2, 1863 132 Turns ----------------------[What If ]----------------------- 7:00am: Rosecrans' original plan of battle for the 31st called for McCook to deal with the expected Rebel attack on the right, while Crittenden's Corps crossed Stones River to assault Bragg's right. Van Cleve was to cross at McFadden's Ford early and launch the attack. Wood was to follow, crossing at the ford below Wayne's Hill and falling in on Van Cleve's right as both pushed the Rebels back toward town. Wayne's Hill was considered a vital objective, from which Federal guns were to enfilade the Rebel lines on the west bank. This scenario allows for this plan to be executed with some chance of success. It assumes Bragg balked in seizing the initiative after the skirmishing on the 30th. McCown is still assumed to have extended the Rebel left, but Cleburne is held more tightly in reserve due to Bragg's indecision. Fixed Confederate units and improved Federal dispositions will complicate any early Rebel attack, but will not prevent a later offensive.
