September 17, 1862 27 Turns ------------------[ Historical ]------------------ 9am: McClellan had given the Federal IX Corps the seemingly easy task of securing the "Lower Bridge" over Antietam Creek. If the span could be taken quickly, he hoped the added pressure on the weakened Confederate right flank would trigger the collapse of Lee's hard-pressed army. General Lee, however, had an "ace up his sleeve", as he knew that A.P. Hill's grizzled veterans were due to arrive from Harpers Ferry about mid-afternoon.
