September 17, 1862 14 Turns ------------------[ Historical ]------------------ 8:20am: Hooker's I Corps has been smashed, but in the process has also crippled most of the already-thin brigades of "Stonewall" Jackson's II Corps defending the West Woods. As this battle opens, the advance of Colquitt's brigade into The Cornfield has just been halted, and Ripley's and Garland's brigades are falling back to safer ground. Mansfield's XII Corps is moving up in strength, as is Sumner's II Corps. The Confederates, however, are also expecting reinforcments: Lafayette McLaws has been told by Robert E. Lee to take his division (briefly rested after a grueling 17-mile overnight march from Harper's Ferry) to reinforce Jackson's remnants trying desperately to hold the West Woods.
