April 6, 1862 37 Turns ---------------------[ Historical ]--------------------- ** The First Day at Shiloh ** 7:40 AM: Days before the Confederate assault there had been ample evidence for Grant to suspect something was up. He was confident, however, that the Rebels would not attack. Therefore, no attempts were made to fortify the massive Federal camp, and scouting patrols were lax, if not non-existant. General Peabody, whose troops were encamped in the forward line, was not to so lightly dismiss reports of Rebel campfires in the nearby woods. Before dawn on Sunday, April 6th, he detailed a reconnaissance force to investigate. Around daybreak they made contact with forward elements of the 3rd Mississippi of Hardee's Corps. For about an hour the two sides exchanged musket fire across Seay field. General Peabody, alerted by the gunfire, dispatched reinforcements. By now, however, the Confederates were advancing all along their front. Peabody's brigade soon fell back in disorder, stunned by the overwhelming numbers of gray-clad infantry emerging from the woods. The battle had begun.
