The M13 tanks of the Ariete and Littorio divisions, kept in reserve and almost always far from the Shermans for most of the battle, proved decisive in defending certain objectives under attack by Allied infantry. The construction of a series of fortified lines in the rear proved to be extremely important in maintaining the Italian-German Army's hold on the front.
