Pre-game plans and notes

The area enclosed by the red line are my objectives for the game. I believe if I can secure and hold those objectives, I should have what I need to secure the Major Victory. The area enclosed by the green line are diversionary objectives for the 82nd AB troops. The only German troops on the right side of the map are the 15th PzG Rgt and one of the Italian Mobile groups, the German Infantry component of that (almost 800 men) are the teeth, the rest of it is somewhat underwhelming. The 4th Livorno in the west and the HG Panzer in the north Center are much more significant forces, so any of the HG units that want to chase my paras in the green area will be welcome, although I suspect that Brian will concentrate both of those divisions near the Ponte Olivo Airfield and try and drive through to the beaches. Brian is a skilled opponent, and we’ve played often in the past, so I am not setting my sights high. I will hope to grab what I need and then focus on keeping the loss rates equal to secure my victory, but if needs be I will settle for a Minor Victory and call myself happy with the result.

After taking a break from PzC for 9 months or so, the release of Spring Awakening was a good moment to start playing PzC again.

Instead of continuing with the Minsk '44 campaign we had started in late 2022, we decided to start a campaign game of Spring Awakening.

We're playing the full 98 turn campaign with the "historical" PDT settings. The main difference between those settings and the "dynamic" settings is that movement during mud turns is much slower with the "historical" settings due to higher weather-related MP (movement point) cost multipliers.

This make progress slow, like it should be considering the weather.

No units can move and assault when not in T(ravel)-mode.

The weather, from left to right: the date, percentage chance for Normal conditions, percentage chance for Soft conditions, percentage chance for Mud conditions, percentage chance for Snow conditions, percentage chance for Frozen conditions, min and max visibility in hexes, percentage chance that a storm occurs.

Days 1-3 are very likely to be muddy.

As maximum visibility is 1, no air missions can be launched on the first two days.

Days 4-8 alternate between Soft and Mud.

Days 9-10 are likely to be Normal or Soft.

2 days of Normal weather would play out very differently from 2 days of Soft weather due to the weather-related MP cost modifiers.

James and I temporarily halted our Japan '46 game to test a Japan '45 update. After that, we discussed that we could use a change of scenery and terrain conditions. Decent weather and being able to move more than 1 hex at a time, preferably.

We were debating whether to play another FWWC game last year, but settled on Japan. This time, our choice was the Clash of Empires campaign for EP '14.

The campaign scenario covers the initial invasion of East Prussia by the Russian 1st Army and 2nd Army, with some 10th Army troops arriving near the end. German forces consist of 8. Armee, reinforced by forces coming in from the Western Front and various mixed Landwehr/fortress formations.

Elxaime picked the Entente side, I'll be playing as the Central Powers.

Weather conditions will remain Normal throughout the scenario with 0% chance of Storms, so I won't mention weather conditions aside from occasional references to visibility.

It took me a while to make time to actually write this AAR, though I took notes and screenshots since the beginning. The turn rate is rapid due to the limited number of units involved, we started playing mid April.

At the time of writing, we're at turn 84. Though I'm writing this with the benefit of hindsight, I'll specify my strategic considerations at various points. Events more or less unfolded as I expected thus far. The terrain makes strategic surprises difficult to pull off, with one exception.

Most significant hindsight information: nearly the entire Russian 2nd Army has been pocketed since turn 69, something which I thought had a small chance of happening until later on.

9 turns

January 21st 1942: After the German offensive following Crusader, the Germans were in a position which was, in fact, strategically not too bad. They could not be outflanked and they were closer to their supply base at Tripoli. The British on the other hand were thinly stretched across the Cyrenaica with a long line of communications trailing all the way back to Egypt. With the forces at hand Rommel thought if he struck quickly he could gain local superiority and drive the British back across the desert once again, this time capturing Tobruk and driving all the way to the Nile. Ambitious plans which almost succeeded.

Playing this as the Axis against the Allied AI.

Turn 1
First item that happens in the Strategic War Series is the Air War is conducted. You are presented with an inital dialog but I usually just leave it all the air assignments alone since I am so new to this game and series. At any rate this is the results of the air war so far.
I have combed through the manual and I don't know what the 5 means, if that means 5 air superiority factors, or 5 aircraft lost.
So in this solo AAR I'll take the Axis and be playing against the Allied AI.

This scenario is 14 turns long covering the time period of 24 March to 25 April 1941.

This is from the scenario description:

"North Africa, March 24th 1941: Rommel had arrived in Tripoli mid February, by mid March he assessed that the British were not going to attack, indeed they were using troops from North Africa to bolster the defence of Greece. Accordingly, he attacked using 5th Light Division with two Italian divisions. Meeting little opposition they swiftly moved east along three axes of advance, arriving piecemeal at Tobruk on April 10th. The British had reinforced Tobruk with the 7th Australian Division which grimly held the port. Rommel bypassed Tobruk and finally ran out of steam after taking the Halfaya Pass at Buq-Buq on April 25th."
20 Inf Battalions, 4 Pnzr Battalions in the amphibious assault, from Briton to Dover
10 Inf Btlns, 1 Pnzr Btln embarked awaiting berths in port

Four Fallschirmjager regiments have dropped north of Folkstone at the start.

The starting air forces are divided into Northern and Western groups, although nothing in the scenario description describes whether they are treated/used separately, or altogether. Presumably the Northern group is based in Norway, the Western in France/Belgium/Netherlands.

42 level bomber groups
10 Stuka groups

Currently Luftwaffe has a 2:1 air superiority

The English Channel is heavily mined on both the Eastern and Western approaches.

Schedules reinforcements include 8 Panzer Divisions over the next three weeks:

I've had The First Blitzkrieg for a couple of years and was never enamored with the original maps and counters. The game lacked immersive features, as far as I was concerned.

The recent 4.00 revision, with better maps, has renewed my interest, so I've wanted to try one of the smaller scenarios.

Gamelin's Gamble, scenario 103, posits a full-scale French Saar Offensive in September 1939, as opposed to the historical advance and quick withdrawal. The historical Saar Offensive lasted 6 days, this Gamelin's Gamble scenario lasts 13 2-day turns, Sept 6 - Sept 30.

French-German Frontier - 6th September 1939: With five full Armies deployed in the east, to conquer Poland, Hitler was taking a calculated gamble that the French and British would be paralyzed with indecision, and not take action in the west before events in the east were concluded. While General Maurice Gamelin, the Commander of the French Army, did launch a limited, face-saving offensive in the Saare region, a real opportunity may have been lost by the Allies. General Franz Halder, the German army's Chief of Staff, was astonished by the weakness of the French attack. He wrote, "If the French had used the opportunity presented by the engagement of nearly all our forces in Poland, they would have been able to cross the Rhine without our being able to prevent it, threatening the Ruhr with decisiveness for the German conduct of the War." *Designer Note: Unlike the Saare Offense Scenario (#102), this Scenario depicts a full scale attack by the French on Germany with all forces mobilizing to aid the Poles. However, Belgium neutrality is honored and this area on the map is marked as impassible terrain.

The scenario map is shown here, and has unfortunately been re-oriented so that North is to the right. Only the region between Luxembourg and Switzerland is in play, generally the Saar and Rhineland as shown in the smaller maps.

The Maginot and Siegfried Fortifications are both represented on the map, see the red-dashed hex outlines on the second screenshot below.

The scenario objectives are circled in red, but I think I'll take the general approach of forcing a crossing of the Rhine. However, I don't know enough about the historical French plans to confirm or gainsay what the scenario designer has set as objectives.

Quote:Along the Gette River, Belgium, 18th August 1914:

Following the fall of Liège, the Belgian Armée de Campagne began solidifying a line of defense along the Gette River.

On 17 August, von Moltke issued instructions to von Kluck to shoulder the Belgian Army away from Antwerp. However, to complicate things, von Kluck was also told that his 1.Armee would be under the orders of 2.Armee's commander von Bülow. The cavalry, under H.K.K.2, would also be reassigned to the 2.Armee to provide security between the two advancing armies. Von Moltke's justification for this was that the 1.Armee and 2.Armee must remain in close proximity during their advance on the north side of the Meuse, so that a gap between them would not form.

Von Kluck was furious and argued that it was his 1.Armee, which was on the flank, that had the strategic challenges necessitating independent action, and as such, required the full use of the H.K.K.2 on the northern flank. But this was to be ignored and von Kluck was forced to drive a wedge between the Belgians and Antwerp with his hands tied.

Historically, the Belgians withdrew to the River Dyle in the afternoon and early evening of the 18th, shortly after Haelen and Diest was taken by storm and their flank was exposed, with the 1er Division d’Armée being the primary force engaged. HRH Leopold II recognized that the Germans were trying to drive a wedge between his army and Antwerp and, shortly after the line along the Dyle was established, ordered a withdrawal. On the 19th of August his army conducted a skillful withdrawal to Antwerp, arriving there by the 20th and thus avoiding the trap.

This scenario ends at the point where the Belgians began falling back to Antwerp.

The main objective for the Belgians is to keep as many German units from exiting the map to the west, and, where possible, hold the objectives to prevent a total rout of the Belgian Army.
The Germans can choose to drive off the Belgian's left flank around Haelen by taking the objectives concentrated in that area; it is assumed that a successful wedge is driven between the Belgians and Antwerp if the Germans can take all of those objectives. The Germans can also choose to bypass the Belgian line and gain points by exiting units on the western map which is the route to Bruxelles. By doing this it should balance out any failure on the Germans to drive the Belgians away from Antwerp, but it will probably not gain them a major victory.
While my German infantry attacked the Belgian troops along the whole front the 2.KD was dashing towards Aarschot and could snatch it at 1200 right before the Belgian defenders could reach it.
Diest and Haelen were standing strong against German assaults and further south the terrain cost much time when advancing even before attacks could be made.
Tirlemont was found heavily defended and the Jägertruppe was redirected further north. 9.KD probed west and encountered strong Belgian and French forces.
By nightfall of 18.08.1914 both Diest and Haelen were taken by German infantry and cavalry with some Jäger had set up a defensive perimeter at Aarschot. 4.ID was rushed in night marches towards the west while cavalry and 3.ID were screening against the Belgians in the South. The rest of the German infantry could push back the Belgian defending troops but progress was slow and costly. 9.KD in the very south got under attack from strong Belgian forces and had to give way while staying the flank guard of the army. French cavalry was attempting to outflank them via the South.
The next day brought further slow and costly advances of German infantry along the whole line with several Belgian bataillons getting encircled and wiped out. 4.ID reached Aarschot shortly before strong Belgian forces could start their attack and managed to disrupt most of them.
