Ive been instructed to advance my recon company around village ____ at dawn. The air force reported an enemy column of tanks on the way to cut off our offensive in the flank. Already tasked to take the village was an infantry company from the ____ regiment. A warning that this DAR will include spoilers, so if you have any intentions of playing this scenario blind, you might want to stop reading now. Don't say that I did not warn you.

First off this as a change for me, I get to play with som Fin units. My oponenet and I have been playing each other over a few scenarios, for a little while now, and I know that he is quite able to ruin my enjoyment of this scenario by kicking my a$$,;). The briefing leads me to believe that I will be seeing overwhelming Russian infantry and some light Russian tanks of some sort. I do not have very much at the start, but should be getting more troops as the game goes on.
Right off, this is a neat map, just the location that would have been chosen by Finnish commanders. A good choke point and plenty of cover. I look over my men and equipment and come to the conclusion that I cannot hold ground for any length of time vs numerous Russians. I make my mind up that I am gonna try a fluid defence and will try to inflict as many losses on the enemy as I can all while limiting my own losses and making somewhat of an organized retreat to the large flag. I am prepared to lose both small flags at the moment, so will not put up much of a fight there. The small flag on my left will be easier to defend, so I might hang out here a little longer. I position my AT Rifles in the woods with good LOS and I have my infantry and MG's with short covered arcs waiting to try to catch the lead Russian infantry in the open.
The plan is to hide, ambush, move, hide, ambush, and repeat all the way to the large flag, then hold fast on the left side of the road. The worst that can happen is for the Russians to come at me in a giant wave a overwhelm my guys before they can retreat to their next positions. I do have one platoon of infantry in an isolated position. This is to again shoot the crap outa the enemy and try to cross the open ground behind them as they retreat to the flag. I just need to delay as well as cause casualties, I have to give him something to ponder.
Let's see how this willl work...
Below is the map and my starting positions. Any comments will be welcome and I will try to answer them as best I can.

To post Images in your AAR/DARs threads requires a little bit of preparation on your part, in this help guide i am using Windows XP and the PAINT program.

1) When an image that you want to save is on your screen, press the "Print Screen" button (usually on the right of the F12 Key on a standard 102 key keyboard).
2)You then need to open a picture editing program. Windows provides a generic program called PAINT. It is accessed by clicking on your START button and choosing ACCESSORIES at the top of your programs list.

3) Once PAINT has opened to a blank screen, choose the EDIT and then PASTE option.

4) Now you'll need to cut away the unneeded extra parts of the images and only save the part that you wish to display. This is called cropping, but PAINT labels it "cut".
5) Click on the irregular shape box at top corner to create a "cut box" you do this by left clicking on the image and still holding the left mouse button down drag the box out.

6) Now choose CUT from the Edit menu...

..your image will vanish, but the stuff you don't want will remain behind!

7) Simply go to the FILE menu at the top and choose NEW, don't save the old stuff, and EDIT> PASTE your cut image on the new sheet.

8) You can play about with the tools and colour features to place arrows and text etc...to your image.

9) Go to the top menu again and choose FILE and SAVE AS

and a box will open asking you a) where to save it to (in this case My Pictures) b) what you want to name your picture and c) what type of picture format you wish to use.

I always use the .JPG format as they are a)16 million colours and are larger in size but clearer and brighter and b)acceptable by most forums.

10) Now you can continue back to your game and grab another screen shot and repeat the process for each one you take.

** NOTE: you can only take 1 screen shot at a time, taking 2 of them will erase the 1st one, unless you paste it into your picture editing program, prior to taking the next one.**

When you have your pictures and are ready to put them in a thread/post on the forums you will need to "host" them on the web, see Help Guide #2 My Files (in the announcements area) for the next step.

Here in a current CMAK PBEM scenario vs Sturmvogel, my Panther is area firing a nearby house. There is a sound contact of armour behind the house in the foreground. I was thinking of hunting the Panther up so it could see what was back there....

But the Panther actually targets the sound - look at that!

Next the Panther fires and actually kills the sound contact...

Sphinx v POS
2000-pt QB Mirror M.E. Feb 43

Endgame view typical of both games, absolute carnage with both sides wrecks everywhere..
I thought of drawing thrust arrows on it but it'd look too much like an unfathomable Picasso modern art painting with everything mixed up like crazy as the tanks raced around the streets and houses like a gumball rally..

First game, Sphinx=Axis (Draw)
Wrecks and burning hulks everywhere, Sphinx bought a fleet of Pz III-longs, and I plumped for Crusader 6-pdrs and a couple of Priests.
Second game, Sphinx=Allies (minor win for POS)
More carnage again, Sphinx took Shermans and Stuarts, and I bought PzIV-longs..

Time to do another DAR. It will be on my 960m x 1440m / ME / CMBB map found in the Maps section. I have not played a game on this map, so no real advantage here.
Here are some ground rules that we both agreed to:
1- No Battalion purchases for either side, we can have as many Companies or Platoons as we want.
2- We used the Redwolf Armour Rules for the time the battle takes place.
3- No air support
4- Combined arms setting with troop quality set to medium.

DasTiger chose the Axis side, leaving me with the Allies. With the sides now set I ran the setup to see what the AI would choose for troops for me. I jotted down what the AI picked for my forces and then modified them a bit to fit our game. The AI does not follow any Armour Rules so I had to substitute a little but kept it as close as possible to what the AI picked for me. I have grown quite fond of this method of troop selection, makes me think a little more when it comes to making plans for the battle with what unit can I use for what task, instead of the cherry picked forces.

Here is what my force looks like:
3x Rifle '41 Companies
1x Pioneer Platoon
1x SMG Company
3x DP MGs
3x Maxim MGs
1x 12.7mm DShK MG
1x Flamethrower
1x Sharpshooter
1x ATR
2x 82mm Mortar
2x 76.2mm m27/39 Guns
2x 76.2mm m39 Guns
1x 82mm FO
1x 120mm FO
1x Truck
2x Jeep
1x T-34 m41 Platoon
1x T-34 m42 Platoon
1x BA-10 Platoon

Now just some of my own quirks:
-I do not select enemy units for information.
-I only will target manually for units in Command, otherwise I let the AI do it.
-Detailed armour hits is set to off
I am just mentioning these quirks as sometimes I will do things that others would not, as I will have less information about the enemy, and will have less flexability with my own troops as keeping a HQ in command of my troops is needed to control fire, I have to get rather creative with covered arcs to make units fire kinda where I want them if they are out of command. I just find that the games plays a little more realistic when I does these things, my enemy can play how he chooses.

I have not played against DasTiger before so I have no idea what his style of play is.

I wasnt going to do a DAR on these matches, but Leto sent me some emails that I find amusing, so I have to post something. Check out Leto's post for the details about what we are doing.

Turn 7 Action - Russians
email from Beadleto:
That was, without a doubt, one of the most INTERESTING turns I have ever seen.

We can start negotiating terms now if you’d like.

I got that email before I saw the turn 7 movie, and had no idea what he was talking about. I watched the movie and still had no idea. In fact, it is now two turns later, and I can still only guess.

Leto had said in a previous email that he had already lost two more panzers to immobilizations - implying they were tigers, so I thought maybe he was wanting to surrender.

Anyway, here is an overview of my troops starting turn 7

Started with a company of pioneers, and I left all of them in the city - safe from rockets. I purchased a SMG company and a guards company. I sent an entire company to my right to take the big flag on the right. I sent two platoons down the center and two down the left in support. I also took a Vet T34/85 platoon and 1 t34/76 flamer.

Middle of turn 7 - the last of the german rockets

I lose a t34/85, another is gun damaged. I also lose an opened top light tank. A rocket lands right on top of three squads, but only minor casualties.

Also, notice a lone panther moves down the road (top right of pic) and seems to be just hoping to get picked off.

So I sent Pete a msg saying he could surrender now and I would only take a minor victory. Honestly, I thought he might accept if he had lost two panthers, and had another about to get sniped by light tanks.

IN THE RIGHT CORNER, WEARING GHEY PINK TRUNKS WITH A BROWN STRIPE UP THE BACK FROM SOILING HIMSELF.... THE CHAMPEEEN OF THE KNOWN COMBAT MISSION UNIVERSE AND GREATEST GREATEST GREATEST PLAYER THAT EVER PLAYED THE GAME (Hey, I didn't write that... must be a gimmick thing thrown out there by the promoters... REALLY.)

LETO

(The crowd rises up and begins booing, led by a strange and mysterious cabal of hooded members who shall not be named... Large cabbages and bullet sized tomatoes zip from the trenches of the crowds and pelt Leto mercilessly... a full on mob riot of pure HATRED boils over and police and SWAT teams are called.... On one of the far stadium bannisters, Mark Sweeney jumps onto a railing overlooking the ring, gets naked, waggles his little dinky like a mini-propellor and flips Leto the TRIPLE BIRD while hooting like a madman out of Clockwork Orange.... several hours later... the scene has been pacified by rigorous truncheoning and pepper spray and the calling of the match continues...)

(announcer)
IN THE LEFT CORNER, HAILING FROM SHE-MALE CITY, USA... IN THE (oh my god), UHMM... WEARING NOTHING BUT A JOCKSTRAP G STRING LACED WITH RHINESTONES AND SPORTING A SKULL AND CROSSBONES CUP FITTING.... THE ONE, THE ONLY, NOW DEPOSED ELO LEADER OF THE BLITZ LADDER....

COLONEL T(ea bag.... as an expose on this swinging bisexual wrestler has found out through many secret back room interviews... a nickname he picked up... well, we won't get into that here)

This match up will feature a pre made and troop imported map that brings in an assortment of goodies, oddities, circus acts and rare items that usually is not seen in the average bear type ME...

The PREMISE:

Mirror cage matches... viewed RIGHT HERE... sporting the following imported troops on each side plus a 1500 point unrestricted purchase... June, 1944...

For the RUSSIANS:

1 Platoon of Stuarts (3)
1 Churchill (57mm guns)
1 Valentine (75mm gun)
1 Romanian R-35
1 Romanian T-38
2 TAC AM 60's
2 TAC AM R-2
1 300mm Rocket spotter
1 Company of Romanian Pioneers (3 platoons, 3 FT)
2 Trenches
5 Barbed Wire
1 TRP
1 Wooden bunker with MGMG - Maschinengewehr [GER]

MG - Machinegun [ENG]

1 Pillbox with MG
1 Pillbox with 76mm ATAT - Anti-Tank [ENG]
gun

On the AXIS OF EVHUL SIDE:
1 Nashorn
1 PZR M/15 (47mm gun)
1 Puma (50mm gun)
1 PSWPSW - Panzerspähwagen [GER]
234/3 Heavy AC (75mm gun)
1 Hungarian Toldi iia (40mm gun)
1 Hungarian platoon of Turan II (3)
2 Platoons of Hungarian Pioneer
1 280mm Rocket Spotter
2 Trenches
5 Barbed Wire
2 TRP
1 Wooden bunker with MG
1 Pillbox with 75mm AT gun

The purchase points somewhat favor the Axis, but the imports were bought for balance...

This is a mirror game where one of the mirrors will be broadcast live over at WaW... and the other one RIGHT HERE... so smoke em if you got em!

In this match I have the Axis of Evhul side.

As this is an armor heavy match with many oddjobs, circus freaks and rarities on both sides... I have to go heavy on armor myself.

My kit of sucker punch death (I know, someone out there is writing me up a ticket for being overly "tricksy"...)

5 Panther V
1 Coy of SS Cavalry
2 PZSHRK
3 81mm Mortars.

I need to have a trump card on Dave's Soviet Circus funnies, but feel rather nekkid going into this match with no AT (other than the bunker) and only light infantry... totally not my M.O.

STRATEGY

The left flank is where I plan on driving my blue meanies... I hope to catch Dave with a few hard jabs to the kidneys and then pull back the elastic on his G-string cup and crush his little nuts. This is the most open area of the map and I want to drive fast to get in behind his lines and hopefully catch his infantry deploying from the back setup zone...

In the middle, the Hungary hungary hippos need to hold their ground as they will most likely be the only thing standing between the town and Dave's troops. I see that Dave's placed a MG pillbox to keep me in place, and I will have to bring a panzer up to take it out (rock paper, panzers... panzers beat rock.)

On the far right, I plan on sending the bulk of my troops to take the large flag on the hill. They will be supported by my Hungary hungary hippotanks... and a German 47(t)... I'm hoping that if Dave is sending some of his Engineer troops up to take that large flag, I can gun them down with the German Czech tank. If not, the Turan Turan's with the really bad hair will be hungry like the wolf, and level that building, Romanian piggy's and all. The Turan Turans also will be inplace to menace the town with HE, hoping to get in a few haymakers on Dave's Romanuck Engineer dudes.

As this is my first DAR, I will try to keep it short and simple. All comments welcomed.

We decided to play a March 1943 (South) ME with 750 points each that would be imported with the map and 1250 points to spend as we like using the Redwolf Armour Rules for this time period. The 750+/- points each went to:
-Romanian Reinforced Recon Co. that includes 4x infantry platoons, 4x ZB37 HMGs, 2x ZB30 LMGs, 2x 60mm mortars, 1x 47mm ATGun
-4x Renault R-35 tanks

And on the Alllied side the 750+/- points went to:
-1x Brigade Rifle Co.
-1x Brigade Rifle Platoon
-2x DP LMGs
-4x Maxim MGs
-2x 50mm mortars
-1x 45mm ATGun

107thCav. took the Allied side which leaves me with some Germans to pick from. The troop quality is set to medium so at best I will wind up with is some sprinkling of Vet. and Green troops with the majority being Regular. I tend to lean a little to the infantry heavy side of the scale but with only 1250 points to spend and the thought of seeing T-34s in abundance, I am going to up-armour my force somewhat.
-1x Pz IV G platoon
-1x Marder II
-1x Pioneer platoon
-1x Jager platoon
-1x 81mm FO
-1x20mm Quad Flak Gun
-1x Tank Hunter team
-1x ATR team
-1x Truck
-1x Kubelwagen
-1x Green Sharpshooter(just not enough points for a Reg.)

I want to be able to move both guns with some speed, thus the lift purchases. The map has a fair number of light buildings on it so the pioneers will serve to blast away the enemy strongpoints in the town if needed. The map has 2100 points in flags so ignoring the flags is not an option. Yet, I do not think that all flags are able to be controlled by my side. So the plan is to get control of the easy flags and then wittle his forces down while I move in with my infantry and fight for the flags that can be taken. I'll leave the tough ones for my enemy, and hope that through a combination of flag control and casualties to work out a win.

The map as seen from my side:

Thats right. Sweeny wants revenge (if I was really talented I would do a DAR in prose, but I'm not).

Similar settings as our recent game -
2000 ME, but this time May 45 rather than June 44. A couple of important differences.

1) Axis will have faust-60 and faust-100. Deadly inf AT weapons
2) May overcast means damp ground as opposed to June which is dry.

My one condition was no side could pick battalions, since at 2000 points the allies could only pick a pioneer battalion for close to 1700 points, where the axis have a number of good battalion choices under 1300 points.

The Demon Commander took the axis, and I again have the allies. Either side would have been fine with me.

I decided I would try to show Mr Sweeney how to do a full tank flag rush, so I picked:

2 reg chaffee platoons (fast cheap tanks with 75mm guns)
1 Vet M-10 platoon (the M-10 is a great tank killer for the price)
5 Brit Motorized platoons - 2 Vet, 2 reg, 1 green(6 man squads can ride on the chaffee without splitting - woot!!!)
2 6lb guns
2 HTs
1 3" mortar (my baby)
3 1917 HMGs

If the map was conducive I was going to load up all 8 Chaffees with 2 platoons of inf and charge the flags. But then I looked at the map. Here is my approach:

Two flags right in the middle. But where would I hide my tanks. I wanted to go to the spots marked in green, but the yellow lines show where he has two nice hills on the back of either side. My tanks would just be sitting ducks. So had to scratch the tank riding flag rush.

But also, look at the approach for inf - it is aweful. The grey is where I am going to put my inf, but that is just not a position that is sustainable to anything but hiding. You cannot put inf in buildings - they will get rubbled. My left flag does have decent rough ground. you cant move through it, but you can hide it in ok and it does provide good cover. on the right is just scattered trees, brush and houses. terrible.

As opposed to his approach below:

On his left he has a great reverse slope postion with rough ground and woods. On his right he has a nice wide area of rough ground and woods. And 100m off the flags he has great overwatch locations. On top of the he has the two good overwatch hills.

But I think I have a plan that will work, and it involves taking two key pieces of terrain

This is the far right edge of the map. The woods outlined in yellow are places I have to have. Look how deep into his territory the big woods in the foreground are. If I can get my chaffees there, I will be protected from his AFVs, and have clear LOS to any inf that is approaching the flag.

This is important because there is a lot of debate over whether to flag rush or not. But IMO that really isnt the key issue in an ME. The key issues are 1) the approach leading to the flags and 2)cover around the flags.

First is the approach. From turn 1 you have a very limited time to get your men to ground that you can approach the flags from cover. Unfortunately, I have no covered approach, so I have to get my men to the flags fast. But once I get there I have very little cover around the flags - definitely not enough to fight from. So basically my men will try to hide and not get HE'd to death.

I am excited that I found some spots that had good cover for my inf and my tanks - even though they were away from the flags - that had LOS to his approach. If I can get my units in place before he finishes his approach he will have a hard time.
