Hello, I am new to the forum. My first post is to present a mod of 2D units and map.
In this mod I have tried to give the game a classic look, similar to the maps of the Napoleonic era.
How in these, the relief is not represented by colors but by lines and there is no variation for winter scenarios. Towns and cities are represented more compactly.
The counters reflect the formations of the time. In the magnified view I have kept the troop distinctions included in the last patch, and in the extreme zoom there is no variation.
I hope you find it interesting and do not hesitate to comment on any problem or improvement you find.

Here is Philippe's Eylau-Friedland Art Mod that was originally released on 04/27/19

Because of limitations in the game engine when handling winter terrain, the mod is in two parts. One part covers the battles from December 1806 through February 1807, and the other focuses on the summer of 1807.

Here are a few screenshots:

The big question everyone will ask is why the mod comes in two parts.

This is due to limitations in the current handling of textures by the game engine.

The game simulates three terrain states: deep snow, deep summer, and lesser snow.

To simulate lesser snow, the game engine takes a mix of deep snow and deep summer textures.

This looks pretty weird, so to fix it I redid the deep snow features and then put together a set of lesser snow-covered features.

Unfortunately these also show up in the summer scenarios (which looks even weirder), so the only way to keep things sorted out was to turn this into a double mod -- all the snow in one part and all the green in another.

Scenarios 000 through 107 take place in the winter and use snow terrain, while scenarios 108 through 187 take place in the summer and are very green. It might make sense to remove the winter scenarios from the Friedland mod, and the summer scenarios from the Eylau mod.

Apart from that the mod is pretty straightforward.

Minor nationalities fly their own flags in the unit boxes.

The flags that appear in the background in the unit boxes tend to be the same flags that are carried by the 3D infantry units.

I've made a few adjustments to the UI (like darker terrain boxes) to make things easier to use.

Apart from finishing things that got left out of this version, I'm not expecting to need to make many changes to this mod going forward, but I may change my mind about which units display which flags (I'm not totally comfortable with the Poles and the Russians).

Installation Instructions
------------------------------

Installing this mod is a little bit more involved than installing the other mods in this series, but not significantly harder. So go slowly and be careful. And like swallowing, it's harder to describe than to do.

Start by installing Campaign Eylau-Friedland and updating it with the latest patch.

Somewhere in your computer (probably under the C: drive) you will have a folder called John Tiller Software.

If you look inside that folder, you will probably see a folder called Campaign Eylau.

[The next step isn't absolutely neccessary, but is a good idea in case something gets messed up].

Copy the Campaign Eylau folder (complete with its contents) and rename the copy 'Campaign Eylau_unmodded' or something equivalent. You will need this for reference six months down the road when patches come out and you don't remember what a pristine version of the game should look like. Going forward, don't ever make changes to the unmodded copy (except for JTS Software patches).

[What follows isn't optional]

My mod comes in two folders, one named 'Use this first' and one named 'Use this second'.

If you look inside the folder named 'Use this first' you'll see another folder named 'Campaign Friedland'.

Open that folder and copy the contents (five folders, ten loose bitmaps, and two desktop icons) directly into the Campaign Eylau game folder. You'll be asked if you want to overwrite a lot of files, and always say yes.

You now have a modded version of Campaign Eylau and an unmodded version.

Make a copy of the modded version of Campaign Eylau and rename it 'Campaign Friedland'.

You now have three folders: Campaign Eylau, Campaign Friedland, and Campaign Eylau_unmodded.

Go back to my mod and look at the folder named 'Use this second'

Inside of it you'll find another folder named Campaign Eylau.

Inside of the Campaign Eylau mod folder you'll find two folders, ten loose bitmaps, and two desktop icons.

Copy the contents of the Campaign Eylau mod folder into the John Tiller Software modded Campaign Eylau
folder.

(The desktop icons are in there for a reason. I strongly recommend using them to keep the four different applications sorted out. Different systems will go about using custom icons in different ways, but for the most part what you do is right-click on each application and create a shortcut, move the shortcut to your desktop, then right-click on that shortcut when it's on your desktop and go into properties. Click on change icon, then navigate to where the modded versions of the game are installed and inside each one you'll see a pair of files. Select the appropriate one and don't forget to click on apply or your selection won't take.)

I really can't get on with the current set of 2D icons. By trying to display 2 or even 3 mini icons on 1 counter its looks to me cluttered and confusing. The first priority for me should be that at a glance the unit formation and direction is clear. Unit type can be incorporated INTO this instead of needing separate icon on the counter. This is accomplished in the new gold Civil War Campaigns where Cav line and column are different colours and shapes to Infantry. Other stuff I consider superfluous if it is displayed in the unit info box.

I've been trying to adapt the ACW game icons to Nap Waterloo, given that they are so clear etc. Its currently a WIP, and only the highest resolution is done so far. Doing the others will take longer than I thought (scaling down creates issues, all need to be done by hand individually).

Feedback welcome - particularly with regard to playabilty issues I may encounter / break.

It is my hope that something like this is their long term intent for the Nap series, but if not then they are going down the wrong track for me. The ACW series currently has the best presentation of all the titles IMO, making it playable in all nearly all zoom modes. I'll continue with this for the time being.

I just started playing again after quite some time off and am playing Leipzig. I really can't stand the default look of the game, so I modded the 2D unit icons to have them look the way I want them to look. I started off with Philippe's mod as that was what was currently in my folder when I made the edits and then changed things from there.

Just backup your 2dSymbolsLg file in the maps folders and then drop this one into the maps folder and you should be good to go.

Please note that I did this for Leipzig, no idea if it would work for other games.

I freely admit to having "borrowed" the limber and supply wagon from Petersburg. The resolution is higher in those games, but it still works and I think looks cool. And what the heck, the Old Banshee folks have borrowed from me having used several of my figures in their ACW mod artwork (First Legion), so I'll borrow from them. ;-)

Screenshot

Best,
