To promote the launch of Roman Civil Wars, Leonadis has created 10 competition battles for e-mail play.

Competition battles are called 'Tournament battles' in the game start up screen. This is where you are provided with 10 maps with set up zones for your army and a 12 different armies to choose from. Each map has two specific nation armies that can be used on that map who will fight each other. The specific 2 armies are listed in the scenario description for that map.

Unzip the file into the game Scenario sub-folder then play the game. If you are not familiar with this new feature read the Word document included in this file.

Good luck and have fun.

Etruscans v Romans - Each army has 7,500 points.

Roman briefing:
You have one legion and four cohorts of allies (colony troops.) Each maniple of principes and hastati are individual groups. The entire third line of triarii is a single group. The velites from each cohort (1 principes, 1 hastati, and 1 triarii maniple apiece) are grouped with the principes. This is designed to keep the velites close to the legion. That is why they have no inheirent leaders. The third line is kept 200 meters behind the second, and grouped as a single formation to show how it is intended to be used: as a last reserve.

Etruscan briefing:
You are in charge of a coalition of four Etruscan cities. Your troops are divided into four classes of infantry. The 1st class are heavy infantry hoplites, the 2nd class medium class spearmen, the 3rd class light medium javelinmen, and the 4th class comprises light infantrymen armed with javelins, slings, and bows. You also have heavy cavalrymen from the noble class. To match the frontage of the Romans deployed against you, you decide to deploy your hoplites and spearmen into battlelines with 4 rank depth. You hope your infantry supported by overhead archery fire can wear down the Roman infantry while your cavalry chases off the Roman horse then engages thier infantry from the rear. The Carthaginian army was used for the Etruscans.

I designed this in Punic Wars even though the time frame puts it in the range of Gallic Wars -- the reason being, to take advantage of the Iberian counter mix.

From the scenario description:

The first battle in the epic military career of Quintus Sertorius in Spain. After landing in Spain with a small force of Roman infantry and Mauretanian cavalry, Sertorius moved toward Lusitania to assume command of the revolt against the rule of the Sullan faction. The Roman governor of Hither Spain, Lucius Fufidius, sought to interdict him near the Baetis River. Plutarch states that Sertorius had already merged fully with Lusitanian forces by the time battle was joined, but some modern historians are less certain. This scenario supposes that a junction happens during the course of the battle. The size and composition of the Sertorian army is given by Plutarch, but the army of Fufidius, though known to be larger, is mainly conjectural.

Note the presence of Lusitanian reinforcements on the left edge of the map.

Romans, 11k+, Sertorians, 10k+. Romans are first side.

The Tribuni is a series of scenarios covering fictitious actions of the tribuni attached to legio VII in 58 B.C. Created for HPS’ Gallic Wars PC game these scenarios will cover many hypothetical situations that a tribune may have face in one of Caesar’s legions during his conquest of Gaul.

There are five scenario in this storyline series:

Tribunus_001.scn

Tribunus L. Varro forages for food. *fictitious* Your camp commander, Tribunus Ap. Nero has ordered you to go to requisition food, and fodder from the nearby village belonging to the Tarbelli tribe. He has assigned you cohors VI with its new recruits to accomplish the task. When you arrived at your destination, the local headsman, Lutarius Marganid told you to take what food and fodder you needed but to leave his village and people alone, then he rode off. "Odd behavior", you thought, but at least there was no sign of danger. As your men entered the village you found it deserted of people, "odd." You would have to send your soldiers and servants into the fields to gather the supplies. This delay was unwelcomed, but still no sign of trouble. After an hour our so, your mounted scouts reported a large band of people coming your way. It must be the villagers. After having a look yourself, you concluded it was the villagers, and they were prepared to fight!

Tribunus_002.scn

Tribunus Ap. Nero punishes the Tarbelli. *fictitious* Yesterday the Tarbelli sprung a trap on VI cohors led by Tribunus L. Varro, who was sent to requisition food from the village. Today Nero sets out to punish the village, and to reassert the power and prestige of Rome.

Tribunus_003.scn

Tribunus L. Varro defends the fort. *fictitious* Two hours earlier the detachment leader, Tribunus Ap. Nero, marched out with the fort's three cohors to punish the Tarbelli tribe. You were left with the daily watch and the cohors' artillery to defend the fort. A few minutes ago your sentries reported a Gallic force headed your way.

Tribunus_004.scn

Tribunus L. Varro escorts prisoners. *fictitious* Nero brought back prisoners from his punitive raid on the Tarbelli. He has tasked you with the mission of moving this bounty to legate Crassus' camp. You have been given cohors VI to fulfill your mission. Enroute, you are ambushed by remnants of the Tarbelli, and their allies bent on rescuing their people.

Tribunus_005.scn

Tribunus Ap. Nero defends the fort. *fictitious* The past few days has seen tensions heighten as Gallic resistance to Roman occupation. Forwarned by the sympathetic Ausci of an impending attack by several local tribes, Nero draws his battle line. The new recruits hold the forward wall of the camp supported by the cohors many scorpiones. The Ausci forms on the left of the V & VII cohortes, while the stipatores form to the right.

Included in the zip file is a Word doc giving some more details you may want to read, and that you can use to create your own scenarios.

Six scenarios for Punic Wars. In each scenario each army has 5,000 pts. The Roman army is identical in every one except, in scenario 001a the Roman army has additional leaders. An experiment to see how that plays out, and if players like it.

legio VII takes on a newly recruited Carthaginian phalanx in scenarios 001 & 001a. In 002, legio VII fights a Samnite army. Scenario 003 finds legio VII fighting a coalition of Cisalpine Ligurian Gauls. Numidians attack legio VII in scenario 004, and in 005 a force of Iberians fight legio VII. Scenario 006 has legio VII fight Boii and Insurbes.

Scenario 007 has Boii and Insurbes fight a coalition of Ligures.

All scenarios are fictional, and force quality and quanity were mainly dictated by the 5,000 point level. All scenarios are fought on the same map. Scenarios 001 - 005 have been modified to add a Praetor to command legio VII.

These could be a good club tournament set.
