Sidi Rezegh, 22 November: On 21 November, the 7th Armoured Brigade successfully cleared the edge of the escarpment, north of Sidi Rezegh, and consolidated their positions in the area of the airfield. This was fortunate as it gave their tanks a place of safe haven, behind the 25-pounders, to avoid the panzers advancing from the south. By dawn on 22 November, however, growing concerns forced the Germans to break-off their attacks and, for the first time since the panzers had come together on 20 November, the Panzer Divisions were sent in opposite directions. The 15th Panzer was sent east, in response to the New Zealand advance from Bardia, while the 21st Panzer was sent to el Duda, to block any renewed action by the Tobruk garrison. Later in the day, when neither of these threats materialized, the panzers again came together at Sidi Rezegh, sandwiching what remained of the 7th Armoured Division. Purpose: It seems that T41 is the least popular game in the PzC series. Many posts have debated the 88mm AT and its role in the game. This scenario has a number of changes that i hope will give the game a better feel for those of us who felt frusterated by the low kill ratio. I do not think this mod. is the final answer. I hope to show that with a little tinkering this game can be a better simulation of the unique desert war. Changes: KH_Tobruk_Winter.pdt (1) Changed high and low combat results from 10/50 to 20/100. This will make combat a little more violent. It didnt seem that casualties were high enough for a 2 hr turn. (2) Range results greaterthan 1 hex changed from 3(ie 1/3rd) to 1. This should help out the 88 at 2 hex range. (3) Unit recovery changed from 10/10 to 10/20 favoring the axis. German armored recovery was considerably better than the British as the Germans consistently stayed on the battlefield at night while the British drew back to Laager for the night. The breakdown rate also favors the Axis 9/6 so i left this alone. (4) Added EW from Modern Campaigns to simulate the Superior German Wireless Intercept Service. (0/20) KH_Crusader.oob Changed: (1) 88mm AT morale to"A" and values to 200/2 and14/2 50mm AT hard attack doubled All 50mm Tanks doubled All Tank assault values +5 Axis and Allied All Aircraft soft and hard attack doubled All this hopefully will result in the following: You are now able to attack and destroy a unit with fire instead of wearing them down over the course of X number of turns with fatigue results. Tanks are more effective against infantry in the assault and therefore AT guns should stick with the infantry to provide protection against tanks. AA units are now absolutley needed to protect key units and should not be used as recon. Fatigue will be accumulated much faster of course so i feel that the optional"Faster Fatigue Recovery" rule is a must. I now look at highly fatigued units as those that are temporarily withdrawn for ammo/fuel top ups or resupply. The scenario was chosen because it has 88s,lots of tanks and only six turns. ALL thoughts, comments and suggested changes or embellishments encouraged. Kuriltai
Gazala, 26 May 1942 : On 15 December 1941 the Axis forces began a long withdrawal from Gazala defensive line. This marked the end of the Operation Crusader battles. On 11 January 1942 Panzergruppe Africa concentrated around Mersa Brega position. Rommel seemed beaten but he was unpredict-able, and the exigencies of war helped him turn the tables once again. On 21 January the Axis forces which were renamed Panzerarmee Africa returned to the offensive. In the highly mobile action which followed, many British units simply disintegrated and on 6 February the Panzerarmee was again before the Gazala Line. During the next four months the British Eighth Army and the Axis Pamerarmee Afrika glared at each other across the Gazala line, while each made frantic preparations for a renewal of the battle at some indeterminate future date. Meanwhile, the supply situation for both sides improved considerably. By late May of 1942 it was becoming in-creasingly obvious to Rommel that Allied preparations for an offensive were beginning to outstrip his own. He therefore determined to launch an offensive before the Allies were too strong. The British defensive line ran from Gazala at the coastline on the north almost straight south to Bir Hacheim for a distance of over 60 Km. It was manned by two Commonwealth divisions, the 1st South African and the British 50th whose six brigades were disposed in what came to he known as "boxes" or defensive positions which could be defended from any direction. One additional brigade, the First Free French, was located at the line anchor point at Bir Hacheim in a defensive box of such complexity that the position was almost impregnable. Each box was a self-contained fortress with enough supplies for one week of action, surrounded by dense minefields and connected to the others by a "mine marsh". Behind the line of boxes, Ritchie, 8th Army's commander, kept additional infantry formations, two heavy tank brigades and his two armored divisions. Rommel's plan, code name Operation Venezia was bold and relatively simple. Group Cruewell (15th Schutzen Brigade, × and XXI Italian Corps) opened the offensive with a heavy bombardment and a feint assault at 2 P.M. on the 26th May against the positions of 1st SA division and 50th British division. The main striking force consisted of DAK (15th and 21st panzer divisions), 90th Light division and the 20th Italian Corps (Ariete armored and Trieste motorized divisions). The striking force was to make a rapid night march to the area south of Bir Hacheim, advance the next day (27th May) east of the Gazala Line toward Acroma area and then attack the British forces from the rear.
