SE side of the Rzhev Salient, August 11th 1942: This is best played Head to Head. This scenario poses the question, "what if" the 5th Shock and 33rd Armies had been committed to taking Vyazma, and not been used to support the Rzhev-Sychevka operation. "What if" the 5th Shock had the 5th Tank Corps attached and attacked toward Vyazma along the axis of the Gzhatsk-Vyazma road and railway. Then, "what if", the 33rd Army had attacked NW, across the Sorya river, two days later. Their objective would have been to capture Vyazma and then destroy any pocketed German units.

Designer Note: This version of the Vyazma scenario is designed for more balanced play. This Scenario has been modified in light of player feedback / play testing by Michael Smith SEPTEMBER 2008 V4.0
Fictional Scenario (Designed for Tillercon): August, 1942, The Germans have broken through the Russian line just West of Vyazma. The German XXXXI Panzer Corps (over strength and fully Motorized) has been ordered to exploit the break, take Vyazma and race towards Moscow. On the night of August 4, Gen. Harpe orders a Battalion of Fsch-Jag Regt. 1 to jump behind Russian lines and capture the heavy bridges across the Vyazma river allowing the 5th Panzer Division to cross the river, swiftly capture the town of Vyazma, and cut off the retreat of the Russian 20th Army. The drop is hastily planned, causing the units to be scatttered. The Russians, caught of guard, scramble to close the break, sending several Tank, and Mech. Corps towards Vyazma. Over a 4 day period, a desparate Mechanized battle ensues. German Strategy options allow Axis player to choose where his Divisions will arrive on the Western edge of the Map. Also, the remainder of FJ regiment 1 can be dropped behind the Russian lines. With multiple drop zone choices. Russian strategy options allow the Allied player to decide how soon some reinforcements will arrive. However, there is a price. Corps ordered to arrive at the earliest possible time, will arrive piecemeal. Also, this scenario is designed to be used with explicit supply. The Axis side has supply problems late in the scenario and will need to forage for supplies.
Tarakanovka, Russia, August 2, 1942: (Hypothetical). This scenario depicts an infantry attack by two German Infantry divisions supported with Corps assets against a Soviet Rifle Corps. The Germans have the advantage of higher morale, greater firepower, and an abundance of engineering units. The Soviets have the advantage of a defensive line in prepared positions, more artillery and more infantry. The objective of the German attacked is to take the victory hexes and exit as many troops off of the map as possible.
