c_Question Mark  Birth of America 2 - Have Questions & Need Answers
Fellow Armchair Generals: Big Grin

I've been eyeballing the following Matrix game - Birth of America 2: Wars in America

as a possible purchase, but need answers to the following questions before I click the "buy" button! :conf:

(1.) Is this the correct forum for Birth of America 2?
(2.) How popular is this game? Is there a good following?
(3.) Is it an interesting and exciting game?
(4.) Is there a healthy PBeM environment for it?

I am interested in the American Revolution, and enjoy strategic-level treatments of this war. I own the old Avalon Hill 1776 board game and Birth of America 2 seems to take a similiar slant? I would like to find like-minded gamers who would be interested in PBeM.

But... I also don't want to shell out over $70.00 to buy Birth of America 2 and have it moth balled because there are no gamers interested in PBeM. I really don't want to resort to just playing the AI. Eek

Looking for some answers? :chin:

Mike;

Officially it's not supported on the Ladder here at the Blitz. That doesn't mean it couldn't be, just that there has been no requests made to support it. The only titles which we currently support that concern the American Revolution are HPS' Campaign 1776, which has a small following. If there is support for a game we will gladly find away to add it to our ladders.

I know how you feel about not wanting to plunk down the cash for a new game if you can't PBEM. I recently purchased Forge of Freedom by Matrix and I think it's the greatest thing since sliced bread but there are only a few players of it here at the Blitz at the present. I'm hopeful that grows, but Matrix games (brand new ones anyway, not re-releases) tend t be quite expensive ($60 and up) which explains in my mind why we have a lot more HPS games players here abouts (they go for $30 and up).

Hi Paul:

Thanks for your input! :)

I've received player feedback that the AEOD Forums (developer of BoA2) have an active PBeM community for BoA2. :chin:

Will take a "look see" there. :cool:

Hi Mike,

I picked up Birth of America 2 from NWS Online Gaming Store really cheap. In fact, I just checked and it is selling for $14.99. It definitely looks too good not to be played.

I did pick-up the game... now I'm trying to find reliable PBeM opponents. :( See my PBeM Proposal post in this forum. Why don't you sign up?

MIke;

FWIW, I did look at the game, and being a big fan of the old AH game 1776, and an even bigger fan of the old SPI game 13:The Colonies in Revolt; I was seriously considering the game. Especially after DDD reported he picked up a copy for $15 from NWS On Line. What stopped me was the 1GB RAM requirement. My old gaming PC doesn't have that much RAM so I stopped looking at it.

Now, another Matrix game that I have (and LOVE - LOVE - LOVE) is Forge of Freedom, and it too stipulates that you need 1GB of RAM, however a friend told me not to worry that you could play with as little as 512MB, so I bought the game and play it without a lot of the animations and it runs fine and I am just as happy. If BOA2 was the same way I'd probably buy it and give you a game. Any indications that would be the case? Any mention of that in the manual?

The BOA2 user manual stipulates 1GB RAM - recommends 2GB RAM for Vista. Not sure why? :chin: There is no 3D animation (in fact there is little animation - even in battles)

Other gripes... Game loads REAL slow (again, I don't see the reason for this - especially with a 2D "flat" game like BOA2) and user controls seem a little "mushy" - for example, you have to click on one little area of a highlighted scenario title to load the scenario. Also, PBeM takes a little getting use to. You have to exchange different named game files without clicking the finish button during your turn.

However, it is a different enough type of game (strategic) to warrant a "look see." :chin:

Also having a difficult time locating players who would support a Blitz ladder. :(

Wow, AGEOD's American civil war game is only $20. Although I am not sure if I have the time to play I might pick one of them up.
