RE: Luftwaffe Pilot in his Second Job
Saw this on the news last night, the a/c got hit with very strong winds (hurricane gusts they said, you can hear the wind blowing in the back ground) just as he was trying to land. Actually scraped his left wing on the runway but so little damage done that the plane continued on it normal route. The pilot went around and got it in the second time. He is being called a hero and I agree, hell of a job flying with 130+ passengers on board.

I agree he's a hero for that effort, but what about the control tower who sent him for a landing in the first place, you can tell its blowing a cross wind by the way he's making the approach - sideways. But i suppose the gust was a bit freakish.

Looks like a typical approach into Wellington airport in NZ, which if your on the right side of the plane can actually see the runway coming towards you as you come in, and waves as your over water, lots of fun.Big Grin

Haven't seen the video yet..

For those of yu who may not have seen it: under the historical topics section of the blitz is a thread with a link to a couple of neat WW2 related videos.. one is a short video of a still-flying Bf109G.. it's in two segments.. one at a grass field, the other at an airshow (also a grass field).. first video segment is outstanding.. good audio and flight views.. what really caught me was the landing.. as you watch the video, you'll see the 109 on final approach and notice that the aircraft remains nearly nose-on to the camera until touchdown.. now there is no way that the camera is sitting in the middle of the landing zone.. to those in the know, the pilot is fighting a cross-wind as he side-slips into the field.. for those of you really in the know, let me emphasize that he's doing this is a Bf109.. which was notorious for ground looping due to the very narrow landing gear stance.. the video clearly shows that this pilot for sure knows what he's doing with his 109..

To add to that story, turns out the pilot wasn't in control during the landing but the 24 year old FEMALE co-pilot. Driving may not be their thing, but they can fly! :smoke:

Remember the BA crash a month or so ago, landed short of the runway?

They have released the final part of the Cockpit Voice Recorder, and you can hear a man's voice saying....

" Go on. Let her have a go......."

:) :) :) :) :)
