I think this is what they mean by "Stumbling upon the enemy." Never saw the Krauts until I'd been lying on top of them for a good 5 seconds.

Probably had a leader with good stealth rating and were vet or above troops. It pays to pay attention to your leadership's ratings. In a night game with Will I was able to walk my paratroopers almost onto the objective before he saw them.
